Journalism Syllabus and Classroom Procedures

2006 – 2007

 

Course Description:

This course is designed to be a fun, introduction-level course in journalism. The class will begin with an overview of the history of journalism, incorporating the various forms of journalism, including newspaper, magazines, radio, television, and the Internet. Students will learn to recognize bias and point-of view and will analyze these techniques in various news media. The final weeks of class will be spent creating and publishing a Maywood Newspaper.

v   Ethics/Censorship/First Amendment

v   Bias and Point-of-view

v   Modern News/Journalism

v   Journalism Techniques

o      Choosing a story

o      Editing methods

o      Proofreading Marks

v   Create and publish Maywood Newspaper

 

Student Expectations:

At various times throughout the trimester, students will be allowed to leave the classroom to work on class projects related to the school newspaper or other school news-related items. These projects may include staff/student interviews, photography, research, or other specific duties designated by the teacher. At all times, students are expected to behave in a professional, responsible manner.  If students are not acting responsibly outside the classroom, appropriate disciplinary procedures will be followed, and students will lose the privilege of working outside the classroom. Students will still be expected to complete all class projects, but will need to make arrangements to complete them on their own time (lunch, before and after school, etc.)
